What agencies check

Agencies verify identity and age, ask for photographs and hold an interview. The interview counts for more than the photographs. What they look for is whether someone can hold a conversation, recognise another person's limit and keep an appointment. Appearance matters but does not decide it.

Age

The minimum is eighteen; in practice registration starts around twenty five. There is steady demand for men over forty and over fifty, who are comparatively scarce at most agencies.

What is earned

The rate on a profile is not what someone keeps. Part goes to the agency for mediation, scheduling and screening, and travel costs only cover travel. Anyone starting out sits at the lower end of the market and receives few requests in the first months.

Realistically: a few bookings a month in the first year, more as feedback accumulates. Treating this as a main income almost always disappoints.

Obligations

In the Netherlands most companions work as self employed, which means registration with the Chamber of Commerce, keeping records and filing tax returns. Belgium has comparable rules for the self employed. Agencies provide information but do not take this over.

What the work actually is

Evenings and weekends, a lot of driving, and conversations that are more often about nerves than anything else. Those who last several years all name the same thing: the listening is the work and the rest follows from it.
